ARTF5994M Essential Research Skills 1
This module is not approved as an Elective
Advanced Research Skills 1 consists of two related parts: The module serves as an introduction to the extensive resources and skills support provided by the University of Leeds. Students work independently through online material offered by Skills@Library. This individually paced learning enables participants to refresh, complement and expand their research, referencing, writing and time management skills. Additionally, students and staff from the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies come together in four interactive lectures. These address issues such as ‘deep’ reading and how to make the best use of databases and other digital resources. A further focus is on the rewards and challenges of working with archives or with human participants.
The objectives of this module are:
- to practice advanced research skills,
- to raise awareness of methodological and practical issues,
- to showcase the wealth of resources available,
- to increase confidence,
- to encourage and facilitate aspirational and original student research.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- locate library sources and resources at the University of Leeds and beyond,
- reference appropriately,
- construct suitable and viable research strategies for essays and larger projects,
- undertake and manage projects involving archives or human participants.
